On February 9, 2019, I met up with a couple of people from the Singles Hiking Albert FB group to hike Tunnel Mountain and also do teh short walk to the Hoodoo Trail Lookout. (I’ll have to return in the summer to do the whole Hoodoo Trail sometime.)
Normally I wouldn’t redo such an easy trail but with the temperatures being about -20 to -25 degrees Celcius plus whatever the windchill was, I think it was a good idea to do something short and easy. I was extremely cold and my eyelashes froze again. But long eyelashes and freezing tears made for a pretty cool picture (see my eyelash picture below).
The trail itself was well packed. I forgot my microspikes in my car back in Red Deer at the carpool spot but thankfully I was able to do this trail without any problem in my Sorrel boots. I would recommend spikes for extra traction though. There were some people trail running up and down on this cold day. More power to them. 🙂
This was my second time hiking Tunnel Mountain (first time in the winter) and my first time checking out the Banff Hoodoos. I can’t wait for this polar vortex to disappear. I’m over this cold weather though. It will also be nice to return to see the hoodoos up close.
