On Sunday February 17, 2019 I went to Grassi Lakes with a hiking buddy. It was a cold day and an easy hike was the best thing to do. I’ve hiked Grassi Lakes so many times on the hard and easy routes that now this is really just an easy walk for me. In the summer it’s also nice to head up higher towards the reservoir to see the pictographs created by the Hopi.
This hike is very self explanatory. We took the easy route up. The hard route is closed in winter and only used by ice climbers. I have walked the hard route in winter but I wouldn’t recommend it. It is taped off for your protection. One slip in the wrong place means severe injury or death.
We used microspikes but people were getting up and down easily without them. The route up to the pictographs and reservoir is closed in winter but the two lakes are still beautiful in their wintery splendor.
This is a great route for kids and people looking for a simple walk. You could easily do Grassi Lakes, Johnston Canyon and Tunnel Mountain in a day. Fingers crossed that the weather warms up in March.
