On the morning of February 18, 2019 I met up with some hiking buddies to do a cold wintery hike up Baldy Pass. I left my house at 7:00 am and managed to beat everyone to trailhead. We started hiking a little after 10:00am.
It was a cold one outside. We started the hike at -20 deg Celsius. The first 2 km of the trail were well packed and very easy to walk. This was the flat section before we started gaining elevation. By the 3 km mark we were breaking trail and we were definitely the first ones up that section for the morning. The snow was soft and powdery. I took over breaking trail by the 3 to 3.5 km mark I think (probably 3.5 km mark). I got my little bit done and we made it to the end of Baldy Pass trail where it intersects the Midnight Peak Route and rest of the Baldy Pass Trail that heads east then north. We only did this as an out and back.
Going down was nice and easy though. We only used micro spikes but if the trail isn’t packed I’d definitely recommend bringing snowshoes.
I’ll be back in the summer to do Midnight Peak.
